SALT LAKE CITY--
A crowd of 3,700 eager fans turned out for their first look at the No. 5 ranked Utah gymnastics team Friday night in the Huntsman Center. Fans began arriving as early as 5:30 p.m. for a 7:00 p.m. start to grab the best seats and watch warm-ups. The meet introductions simulated a regular-season meet with the Utes running out of the tunnel to pyrotechnics and a light show.
Then the team, which was divided into "Utah" and "Utes," got down to business with 11 of the 13 gymnasts performing at least one routine. Sophomore All-American Kailah Delaney and freshman Taylor Allex were unable to compete due to injuries.
With just one returning all-arounder on the squad in All-America junior Corrie Lothrop, several Utes made their first pitch to join her in the all-around this season. Turning in especially strong performances on all four events were sophomores Georgia Dabritz and Kassandra Lopez, and junior Mary Beth Lofgren.
After the meet, young fans filled a section of the stands from the first row all the way to the concourse level at row 31 waiting to get autographs from the team.
Utah will open its season at No. 2 UCLA on Saturday, Jan. 12 in a meet televised nationally on the Pac-12 Networks starting at 8:30 p.m. Mountain Time. The Utes kick off their home season on Saturday, Jan. 19 against No. 9 Oregon State, No. 24 West Virginia and Southern Utah. The meet starts at 7 p.m.
