SALT LAKE CITY

Gymnastics season can't come fast enough in Salt Lake City, where 4,000 people turned out for the annual Red Rocks Preview intra-squad meet. The power-packed 2012 Utes did not disappoint and for the first time in history fielded two complete teams on all four events.

From sky-high Tkatchevs on bars to double layouts, Arabian double fronts and full-ins on floor, the crowd saw the kind of gymnastics usually reserved for the postseason. Fourteen of Utah's 15 gymnasts competed, many going all around, and five new freshmen made a big impression with a month to go before the season officially gets underway.

The sophomores and seniors also put on a show (junior Fumina Kobayashi missed the meet with an ankle injury), highlighted by the return of Kyndal Robarts. The All-America senior missed most of last year with a knee injury and was back in her familiar role near the end of the lineup. Another highlight was Victoria Shanley's performance on bars, despite the fact she had to set down crutches and hop to the low bar on one foot due to a stress fracture in the other. Shanley, of course, did not attempt a dismount.

No scores were kept or it may have come down to the last routine to determine if the Red or the Rocks team was the victor, but everyone came away feeling like a winner. After the meet, lines snaked up the stairs and down the concourse as young fans waited to get autographs from the Utes.

The No. 5-ranked Utes open their season on Jan. 8 at No. 1 UCLA. The first home meet is Jan. 13 vs. Utah State.
