LOS ANGELES - Despite out-shooting the Women of Troy 12-9, the University of Utah women's soccer team (8-5-2, 3-4-0 Pac-12) dropped a 1-0 decision at USC (5-7-3, 2-3-2 Pac-12) Friday as the Utes began a five-match road stretch.

"I was very proud of our effort and focus after withstanding USC's surge at the beginning of the game," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "The team worked hard together to figure out how best to attack them and we really pushed forward in the second half. I think we were really unlucky not to get an equalizer. The team is continuing to grow, we are competitive and hungry to win, and I think it will serve us well in the next few games."

USC scored the game's only goal in the 34th minute as Jordan Marada put away a cross from Elizabeth Eddy from about eight yards out. The Utes nearly tied the game less than two minutes later as a long cross rang off the post and hit a USC defender, who was lucky not to be whistled for a handball in the penalty box.

Utah controlled the run of play in the second half, out-shooting USC 9-2 in the frame, but came up just shy of finding the equalizer. The Utes had several solid scoring opportunities, including another cross from freshman midfielder Kaycee Buckley that hit the crossbar and a right-footed shot from junior defender Jenny Hutton that skipped through traffic in the box but was saved by USC goalkeeper Caroline Stanley.

Each team put five shots on goal in the match, with Stanley saving all five Ute attempts on frame. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Lindsey Luke made four stops in goal for Utah. USC took two corner kicks to Utah's one, while fouls were whistled 17-15 against the Utes.
