SAN DIEGO-The San Diego State University women's soccer team lost 4-2 to the Utah Utes in a WAC match today at home. The loss dropped the Aztecs to 6-4-1 (1-1 WAC) on the season. Utah's record improved to 5-6-0 (2-0 WAC) for the year.
SDSU was shutout in the first half, while Utah notched two goals. Freshman forward Lorrie Tipton scored the Utes' first goal at the 13:11 mark. Utah's second goal came off the foot of sophmore defender Karen Boardman with 1:34 remaining in the first half.
The Aztecs cut the Utes' lead to 2-1 on a goal by junior midfielder Catherine McGuire at the 46:15 mark of the second half. Freshman midfielder Elicia Petre registered the assist on McGuire's goal. Petre tied the game for SDSU at 2-2, off a rebound from a free kick by MaGuire at 58:11.
Utah's Boardman broke the tie at 80:13 with a goal assisted by junior midfielder Melanie Hewitt. Boardman completed a hat-trick when she tallied the Utes' forth goal of the game at the 85:02 mark. Assisting on the play was sophmore forward Staci Burt.
SDSU edged out the Utes in shots 12-11, while Aztec sophmore goal keeper Katherine Judkins recorded four saves in the loss.
The Aztecs face WAC foe Hawaii at home next Friday October 17, 1997 at 1 p.m. before traveling to play UC Irvine away on Sunday October 19, 1997 at 2 p.m.
