News and Notes
This Week's Action
The University of Utah soccer team (0-0-0) kicks off the regular season Friday at Western Kentucky before traveling across the state to Lexington for a contest on Sunday with UK. Both games are slated for 11 a.m. MT starts.

Experienced Group of Utes
Utah returns every single player that scored a goal or recorded an assist in 2012. That experience should benefit the Utes throughout the season. Utah had 10 players score goals last year and 19 different Utes started in the second Pac-12 season for the club.

Ford Focused
Utah defender Avery Ford was selected by College Sports Madness to its Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference Team. An Honorable Mention All-Pac-12 Conference selection last year, she started all 19 games as part of a defense that ranked third in the Pac-12 in goals allowed per game (1.11).

Ford finished third on the squad with six points, assisting on back-to-back game-winning goals against Washington State and Washington. Ford also excelled in the classroom as she was named Honorable Mention Academic All Pac-12 and was one of 19 Utes named to the Athletics Academic Honor Roll both semesters.

Luke Locked In
Utah goalkeeper Lindsey Luke earned Pac-12 All-Freshman honors and was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week (Oct. 2) after allowing only one goal in a weekend sweep of Washington and Washington State. She was also named the CollegeSoccer360 Primetime Performer and Player of the Week

Luke finished the season with 85 saves and an .810 save percentage, both of which ranked fourth in the Pac-12. She also posted a 1.12 goals-against-average with shutouts of Weber State, Texas, Portland State and Washington. She was also the goalkeeper of record in a 1-0 shutout of BYU, her first collegiate appearance.

Utah's New Class
Though small in number, the 2013 freshmen class brings size on defense and adds depth all over the field. Standing at 5-foot-10, Hannah Hyde brings more height and athleticism to the Ute defense, while Madeline Webster's leadership and ability to start the attack from the defensive third will bring another dynamic element to the back line.

Adding size and depth to the goalkeeper position is Tara Shipp, who also stands at 5-foot-10. Two other players will give depth to the midfield and the front and back lines with their versatility. Taylor Slattery is an attacking player who can perform up front or in the middle, while Cabria Turang is a defensive-minded player who can also transition in and out of the midfield and could give the Utes another threat on the wings. Utah also added Charlotte transfer Darby Broeker.

Scouting this Weekend's Opposition
Western Kentucky Hiltoppers
Western Kentucky beat Tennessee-Martin and tied Morehead State in exhibition action and returns First Team All-Sun Belt selection Chrissy Tchoula. The midfielder enjoyed a successful 2012 in helping provide opportunities to one of the Sun Belt's top offenses.

Sophomore Nikki Hall put together a 0.87 GAA mark overall and a 0.46 GAA mark in conference play. She allowed just five goals in league play and allowed multiple goals twice, both games against Southeastern Conference foes. Hall played the entire conference slate for the Lady Toppers, the third player in program history to do that, and had a streak over 500 minutes without a goal allowed.

Kentucky Wildcats
Kentucky returns nine of 11 starters, and 10 of 12 players who scored a goal, from the 2012 team that captured the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament win. The Wildcats will also be opening their multimillion dollar UK Soccer Complex this weekend. The 'Cats are led by defender Arin Gilliland, midfielder Courtney Raetzman and forward Kelli Hubly.

Gilliland was a First Team All-SEC pick last year and a third team All-American after leading the squad in goals (7), assists (7) and points (21).  Hubly was second on the team in goals and points while earning SEC All- Freshman honors. Raetzman was another All-Freshman Team selection with four goals and four assists

Series History
Utah has never played a team from the Sun Belt Conference and this will be the first meeting between the Utes and Hilltoppers.

However, Utah is 4-7 all-time against opponents from the Southeastern Conference. The Utes and Wildcats have played two times with the home team winning both games. UK topped Utah 3-0 in Lexington back in 2001 and the Utes returned the favor in SLC the following year with a 2-1 overtime victory.

The Utes will be looking for their first win against a SEC foe since 2003 and first road win since a pair of victories in 2000 against Georgia and South Carolina.

Six Utah Games to be Televised Live on Pac-12 Networks
The Utes will appear live on Pac-12 Networks six times this year. Their first televised game will be a non-conference tilt against Oklahoma on Sept. 22. Other scheduled televised games include: Oct. 13 at Washington State, Oct. 25 vs. No. 5 UCLA, Nov. 1 at Arizona, Nov. 3 at Arizona State and the regular-season finale on Nov. 8 vs. Colorado

Preseason Prognostication
UCLA was selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2013 regular season Pac-12 title. The 2012 Conference runner-ups collected 117 points and 7-of-11 possible first-place votes. Four-time defending Conference champion Stanford was a close second, tallying 115 points

Behind them were California (99), Washington (77), Arizona State (74), Oregon State (70), Washington State (70), USC (65), Utah (37), Colorado (27), Oregon (21) and Arizona (15).
