News and Notes
This Week's Action
The University of Utah soccer team (1-0-2) will look to keep its unbeaten mark intact as it takes on two local rivals this weekend. The Utes travel to Provo on Friday evening to play at No. 6 BYU in the first installment of the 2013-14 Deseret Duel Rivalry Series. Utah then holds its home opener on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it welcomes Southern Utah.

The Deseret Duel Rivalry Series
Friday night's matchup between Utah and BYU will mark the first contest of the 2013-14 Deseret First Duel rivalry series. The rivalry series includes each sport where Utah and BYU compete head-to-head during regular-season play. The Deseret First Duel uses a system that awards points to the winner of each competition. A team trophy will be awarded to the individual winner in each sport. Points won by the individual sports will count toward each school's overall total. A granite traveling trophy is awarded to the overall series champion each year.

Utes Stay Unbeaten with Road Draw
Utah soccer stayed undefeated with another stellar defensive effort in a scoreless double-overtime draw at Cal State Fullerton.  The Utes tied the Big West favorite on their home field, the third-straight road game to open the season. Lindsey Luke made seven saves to earn her third-straight shutout as Utah was out-shot 14-11.

Robison Excels in New Role
Junior defender Jill Robison was named to CollegeSoccer360's Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll on Aug. 27. The Layton native was a forward last season for the Utes and started 16 games. However, she moved to a defensive role during the offseason and has flourished.

Robison has provided a steady presence in all three games this season, providing link-up play to the midfielders and forwards while adding an assist against WKU.

Luke Locked In
Utah goalkeeper Lindsey Luke earned Pac-12 All-Freshman honors last season and notched four shutouts during her debut campaign. So far this year, she has teamed with the defense to blank all three Ute opponents this season.

Utah has now kept its opponents off the board for 310 minutes of game play and started a season with three-consecutive clean sheets for the first time since 2005.

Experienced Group of Utes
Utah returns every single player that scored a goal or recorded an assist in 2012. That experience should benefit the Utes throughout the season. Utah had 10 players score goals last year and 19 different Utes started in the second Pac-12 season for the club.

Ford Focused
Utah defender Avery Ford was selected by College Sports Madness to its Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference Team. An Honorable Mention All-Pac-12 Conference selection last year, she started all 19 games as part of a defense that ranked third in the Pac-12 in goals allowed per game (1.11).

Ford finished third on the squad with six points, assisting on back-to-back game-winning goals against Washington State and Washington. Ford also excelled in the classroom as she was named Honorable Mention Academic All Pac-12 and was one of 19 Utes named to the Athletics Academic Honor Roll both semesters.

Utah's New Class
Though small in number, the 2013 freshmen class brings size on defense and adds depth all over the field. Standing at 5-foot-10, Hannah Hyde brings more height and athleticism to the Ute defense, while Madeline Webster's leadership and ability to start the attack from the defensive third will bring another dynamic element to the back line.

Adding size and depth to the goalkeeper position is Tara Shipp, who also stands at 5-foot-10. Two other players will give depth to the midfield and the front and back lines with their versatility. Taylor Slattery is an attacking player who can perform up front or in the middle, while Cabria Turang is a defensive-minded player who can also transition in and out of the midfield and could give the Utes another threat on the wings. Utah also added Charlotte transfer Darby Broeker.

Scouting this Weekend's Opposition
BYU Cougars
BYU is ranked No. 6 in the nation by the NSCAA and 3-0-1 on the season. Senior midfielder Cloee Colohan, senior goalkeeper Erica Owens, senior midfielder Rachel Manning and sophomore midfielder Michele Murphy were all named to the Preseason All-West Coast Conference Team, while sophomore defender Paige Hunt was named to the CollegeSportsMadness.com Preseason WCC First Team. Manning and Colohan are tied for the team lead in goals while Elena Medeiros leads the team with five points.

Southern Utah Thunderbirds
Southern Utah enters the contest with a record of 2-2 after splitting a pair of games last weekend. Seven different players have scored goals this season for the Thunderbirds with freshman Aurora Moberly and sophomore Brianne Brown each scoring twice. Moberly has also tallied two assists to lead the squad. Freshman goalkeeper Elyssa Hashimoto has started every game so far but has yet to attain a clean sheet.

Series History
Utah is 6-18-1 all-time against the Cougars, including a 3-10-1 record outside of Salt Lake City. BYU had won the last four meetings in the series, until last year's Ute victory. Jill Robison's early goal was the difference as Utah came out on top, 1-0. Lindsey Luke relieved an injured Cheyanne Mulcock and made six saves to preserve the shutout. It was the only loss of the regular season for the Cougars.

The Utes topped Southern Utah in their only meeting last season, 4-0. Baylee Nielsen scored twice and added an assist, while Avery Ford and Harley Spier also added goals. Katie Taylor, Jen Ericson and Ashton Hall all recorded assists as Utah scored all their goals over a 27-minute span during the second half.

Six Utah Games to be Televised Live on Pac-12 Networks
The Utes will appear live on Pac-12 Networks six times this year. Their first televised game will be a non-conference tilt against Oklahoma on Sept. 22. Other scheduled televised games include: Oct. 13 at Washington State, Oct. 25 vs. No. 5 UCLA, Nov. 1 at Arizona, Nov. 3 at Arizona State and the regular-season finale on Nov. 8 vs. Colorado

Preseason Prognostication
UCLA was selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2013 regular season Pac-12 title. The 2012 Conference runner-ups collected 117 points and 7-of-11 possible first-place votes. Four-time defending Conference champion Stanford was a close second, tallying 115 points

Behind them were California (99), Washington (77), Arizona State (74), Oregon State (70), Washington State (70), USC (65), Utah (37), Colorado (27), Oregon (21) and Arizona (15).
