ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Utah women's softball team remained undefeated on the second day of the Red Desert Classic, downing Southern Utah, 9-0, and defeating Idaho State, 4-1.
Utah (4-0) scored a run in both the second and third innings before exploding for seven runs in the fourth. A Ute hit a grand slam for the second time this season, as Shari Fonoti blasted one over the fence in the fourth inning. Angie Boardman went 2-for-2 and scored a run while Kristie Keller was 3-for-4 with two runs.
Kara Foster led the Utes at the plate against Idaho State, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored. On the mound, Smuda earned the win in five innings, while Brittany Parker came in for the final two innings, striking out four of the six batters she faced, including three-straight in the seventh inning.
"Idaho State's pitcher didn't miss, so it was a challenge for us," head coach Amy Hogue said. "She put the ball on the black of the plate. It was a good game for us because that is the kind of pitching we are going to face most of the season. Although the runs were hard to come by, we got behind good pitching and found a way to win.
"It became obvious that Ashley was tired. We have relied on her all weekend and she's done a great job. Brittany came through for us late in the game. She got the win with a vengeance."
