LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Utah softball team suffered its first setback of the season with a dramatic 3-1 loss to Wichita State here at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., this evening.

The Shockers (3-3) plated two runs with two outs in the seventh inning. Both runs were unearned. The Utes fall to 4-1.

Brianna Gourdin tallies her first loss of the season, falling to 1-1. She went all seven innings, struck out nine and walked six. She allowed one earned run. Lindsey Craig got the win for WSU and improves to 1-2.

Kate Nygaard was 1-for-2 for the evening with an RBI while both Ivette Hernandez and Devina Quintero were 1-for-3 at the plate. Britnee Barnett was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Shockers and also scored the insurance run.

Wichita State sealed the deal in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded and two out, a wild pitch allowed pinch hitter Kyra Whitt to score from third. Tawnya Guthrie plated the insurance run with an RBI single to left, scoring Barnett from third.

The Utes rallied from a 1-0 deficit in the fourth when Nygaard's single to right center allowed Meghan Crouse to hurry home from second. Crouse pinch ran for Quintero who singled to right earlier in the inning.

Utah had chances in each the fifth and sixth frames to take the lead. In each of the innings, it had two runners on and two outs but failed to convert.

The Shockers got on the board in the second stanza when Stephanie De La Riva led off the inning with a solo home run to right field.

Tournament action continues on Sunday, Feb. 13, with another change to Utah's schedule. The Utes will play Michigan at 8:30 a.m. and California-Riverside at 12:30 p.m.
