HONOLULU - Senior shortstop Kelsi Hoopiiaina and junior center fielder Chalese Fankhauser registered RBI extra-base hits, but University of Utah softball team fell to No. 19/15 Baylor, 5-2, Thursday in the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament.

Utah (13-9-1) totaled six hits on the day as Fankhauser turned in her fourth double of the year in the second inning of the game and now has five RBI on the year. Hoopiiaina followed with her second triple of the season, and the fifth of her career, and she now leads the way with 18 RBI in 2013.

Junior Naomi Amu made the start on the mound for the Utes and went 4.2 innings and allowed eight hits and two earned runs, while striking out two and walking one. Freshman Kayce Nieto threw 1.1 innings and gave up three earned runs on five hits and unfortunately had to take the loss and fell to 2-3 this season.

Baylor got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second when Clare Hosack and Holly Holl turned in back-to-back doubles to give the Bears an early 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, the Utes pushed two runs across home plate to grab a 2-1 lead as sophomore Marissa Mendenhall wrapped a leadoff single up the middle to start. Junior pinch runner Trina Gomez entered the game in Mendenhall's place and Fankhauser doubled to left-center and throwing error by the Baylor Bears allowed Gomez to score Utah's first run of the game. Fankhauser has now driven in five runs this season. Hoopiiaina then followed with her second triple of the year to left field off an 0-1 pitch that allowed Fankhauser to give Utah the lead, 2-1. Hoopiiaina leads the team with 18 RBI.

 

 

Baylor got one run back in its half of the fifth to re-tie the game and then picked up a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to set the final margin, 5-2.

No. 19/15 Baylor received impressive performances at the plate by its No. 1 and 2 hitters as Kaitlyn Thumann and Kathy Shelton combined to go 6-for-7, while Holl drove in four runs. Pitcher Whitney Canion picked up the win after not giving up an earned run on one hit to improve to 12-3 in pitching decisions this season.

Next up in the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament, the Utes will play a doubleheader on Saturday with a pair of opponents to be determined by tournament play. Game times are to be announced and will be posted at utahutes.com as soon as possible.
