SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Utah played to a 1-1 record on the second day of the San Diego State Classic, downing Cal-State Fullerton, 7-2, before falling to No. 25 Long Beach State, 9-1.

Down 2-0 in the second inning after a two-run home run by Fullerton's Lauren Lupinetti, the Utes (14-12) took the lead with a four run third inning. Kelly Matthews drove in the first run with a suicide squeeze bunt, which scored Staci Hemingway. Kara Foster had the big hit of the inning, doubling down the left field line with the bases loaded and scored all three runners, Kristie Keller, Matthews and Brittany Parker.

Utah added three in the fourth inning. Diana Phillips started the rally with an RBI single up the middle to bring in pinch-runner Meghan Crouse, while Kristie Keller's bloop hit to left center field brought Phillips and Bonnie Muir around to score.

Keller went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the game to lead the Utes at the plate.

Brittany Parker (6-6) pitched a complete game, only giving up two runs with six strikeouts.

Long Beach State broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning, scoring seven runs to take an 8-1 lead. The Leathernecks also brought a run across the plate in the seventh inning to bring the score to 9-1.

Utah scored its lone run of the game in the third inning. After Angie Boardman walked to reach base, Foster doubled to left center field to bring Boardman around to score. Foster was 2-for-3 in the game.



Ashley Smuda earned the loss for the Utes. Parker struck out three in just over an inning of relief, while Haili Squire pitched the final three innings.

The Utes close out the SDSU Classic Sunday morning at 9:00 am against New Mexico State.
