San Jose, Calif.--The Utah softball team dropped game one of a doubleheader against San Jose State on Monday afternoon, 2-1. The close battle saw the Utes outhit the Spartans 7-2, but it was five errors that cost Utah the ballgame.
Utah saw plenty of scoring opportunities in the game, with lead-off hits in four of the six innings. A lead-off double in the second and a lead-off triple in the third looked promising, but were wasted as the Utes went on to strand five runners in the game.
Jackie Wong, Niki Hayhurst and Lynsey Wall each knocked a pair of hits in the loss. Hayhurst scored the Utes' only run in the fourth after reaching base with a double to center and then advancing home on Wall's single to center. Masie Ota added a hit in the loss to extend her hitting streak to four games.
Senior Jen Pursell threw another strong game for Utah, striking out five in 6.0 innings. The hurler didn't allow an earned run, but suffered the loss to fall to 4-5 on the year.
