TEMPE - Junior right-fielder Marissa Mendenhall turned on a three-run homer in the sixth inning, but the University of Utah softball team suffered a 7-4 defeat at No. 6 Arizona State on Saturday in a Pac-12 Conference series final at Farrington Stadium.
Utah (16-19, 3-12 Pac-12) was led by Mendenhall, who now has 19 RBI this season after connecting on a three-run homer and has hit in six consecutive games. The Stansbury Park, Utah native is second on the squad with four home runs this season with two coming in the Arizona State series alone.
After ASU scored once in the first inning, junior left fielder Kate Dickman led off Utah's sixth at-bat with a single back through the middle, junior Mariah Ramirez drew a walk before Mendenhall tagged a three-run homer with two outs off a 2-1 delivery to give the Utes a 4-2 lead.
Sophomore third baseman Kristen Stewart drew a walk to lead off the third frame and she advanced to second after a groundout by sophomore catcher Shelby Pacheco. Senior center fielder Chalese Hadley took two bases after the ASU left fielder misplayed a fly ball. Freshman second baseman Hannah Flippen then launched a sacrifice fly to left field for her 20th RBI of the season. Unfortunately, the Sun Devils came back with five runs in the bottom half of the sixth.
Ramirez started on the mound for the Utes as she allowed two earned runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings with a pair of strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Sammy Cordova threw 1.1 innings of relief with four earned runs on four hits with a walk, while sophomore Kayce Nieto allowed two hits in 0.2 innings to close the game.
