SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah softball team won two Western Athletic Conference games with seventh inning rallies over New Mexico, 4-3 and 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at Ute Field.
Utah solidified itself in third place in the conference standings, improving to 27-16 overall and 14-8 in the WAC. New Mexico, the last place team in the league, fell to 20-33 and 5-17.
With the Utes trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh in the opener, Stacy Holmes reached on an error and Sandy Rhea walked to start off the inning. Lisa Hashimoto then layed down a bunt, attempting to move the runners ahead. The throw by catcher Carmen LoNigro hit Hashimoto in the back as she was called safe at first base. The ball dribbled into right field, allowing both Rhea and Holmes to score unearned runs to win the game for the Utes.
Sarah Farnworth improved to 16-8 with the win, striking out six in seven innings.
Sunny Smith hit a three-run home run to left field to break a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh in the night cap. Smith's second homer of the season brought in Nicole Wilkinson and Jenny Monson. Smith went 2-for-4 in the game.
Jamie Wilkes won the game to improve to 5-2, pitching 1-2/3 innings in relief of starter Kristin Arbogast.
