SALT LAKE CITY - Junior Mariah Ramirez drove in five runs off a triple and two doubles in two games to lead the University of Utah softball team to a pair of run-rule victories over Utah Valley, 14-4 and 12-3, on Monday at Utah Softball Stadium.

Utah (22-20) earned its sixth win in its last seven games after outscoring Utah Valley 26-7 and earning a 21-10 advantage in hits over the Wolverines between the two games.

Four different Utes had slugging percentages over 1.000, including a triple and two doubles from Ramirez for five RBI.

Sophomore catcher Shelby Pacheco drove in four runs with three hits and a home run for a 1.200 slugging percentage on the day.

Sophomore third baseman Kristen Stewart had three hits, including a triple, and scored three times.

Senior outfielder Trina Gomez tripled as well and drove in a run to cap her 1.000 slugging percentage performance.

Game 1: Utah def. Utah Valley, 14-4 (5 inn.)

Utah scored a season-high 14 runs on 10 hits in the first game of the day as Ramirez was 2-for-3 with four RBI in game one, while Stewart registered two hits and scored twice.

Pacheco drove in four runs with two hits and two runs scored during a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.

Sophomore Kayce Nieto threw 4.0 innings on the mound, allowing three earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts. The Farmington Hills, Mich., native improved to 10-11 on the season. Freshman Sammy Cordova struck out one and did not allow a hit in one inning of relief.

 

 

Utah Valley came up with two runs in the top of the first before Utah came back with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame. Junior left fielder Kate Dickman drew a one-out walk and freshman shortstop Anissa Urtez singled to put Utes on first and second. Ramirez looped her first triple of the season over the head of the Wolverine right fielder to drive in Utah's two runs.

The Utes tacked on three runs in the top of the second to grab a 5-2 lead. Gomez reached with one out after a fielder's choice and stole second before freshman second baseman Hannah Flippen laced a triple to left field before Dickman smacked an RBI single up the middle and freshman first baseman Bridget Castro capped the scoring with another run-scoring single.

UVU put two more runs on the board in the third frame and Utah responded with a pair of its own off a two-run homer by Pacheco, her first homer of the season and the fourth of her career.

The Wolverines scored two more in the top of the fourth to pull within a run, but in the bottom of the fourth, Dickman reached third after Urtez's team-high sixth sacrifice bunt of the season. Castro was hit by a pitch and Ramirez roped a base-clearing double through the left-center field gap for two more runs. Stewart blooped a single over the head of the UVU shortstop and junior outfielder Marissa Mendenhall drew a walk to load the bases full of Utes. Pacheco drove a long two-run single off the right-center field fence to put Utah runners on the corners and gave the Utes an 11-4 lead.

The Utes added three more runs in the frame and cruised to a 14-4 victory as Flippen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Dickman drew another walk to force in Utah's 13th run and Urtez launched a sacrifice fly to center field to set the final margin at 14-4 in favor of the Utes.

Game 2: Utah 12, Utah Valley 3 (5 inn.)

Urtez drove in two runs on two hits with two runs scored and Gomez contributed two hits as well for two RBI. Mendenhall and junior Shelbi Everett also drove in two runs apiece in the finale.

Cordova started game two on the mound and went 4.0 innings to improve to 8-6 on the year after allowing three earned runs on four hits. She struck out five, while issuing two walks.

In the first frame, UVU took a 1-0 lead, but Utah responded with two more runs in its first at-bat. Flippen drew a leadoff walk and took second base after a passed ball. Urtez then knocked an RBI single to right-center field to bring Flippen across home plate. Castro walked and Ute runners were on the corners after Ramirez grounded into a fielder's choice. Stewart was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases and Mendenhall for her 23rd run driven in this season.

The Utes scored five runs in their half of the second as Gomez laced a lead-off triple through the left-center field gap to begin Utah's second frame and Flippen walked on four pitches. Flippen then took second base after a wild pitch as Dickman smacked an RBI single up the middle. Runners were on second and third after a throwing error as Urtez came up with a timely RBI single through the middle for her team-high 38th RBI on the year. Urtez then swiped second base, her first stolen base on the year, and Dickman came around to score after a throwing error by UVU. Ramirez looped a double to center field to plate Urtez and Mendenhall rounded out Utah's scoring for the frame with another run-scoring base hit up the middle to give the Utes a 7-3 edge.

Castro smacked the first pitch she saw back up the middle for a leadoff single to start Utah's fourth. Pinch runner Chalese Hadley advanced to second after Ramirez grounded to second base for a fielder's choice and Stewart singled to load the bases. Taylor Jordan drew a walk to force home her fifth RBI of the year. Gomez connected on a two-run single up the middle to force Stewart and Ramirez across home plate and give Utah a seven-run advantage at 10-3.

In the fifth, Hadley advanced to second after a throwing error by UVU and Ramirez reached on a UVU error before Stewart was hit by a pitch with Everett following with a two-run double to center field to round out the scoring for the Utes.
