Utes Welcome Three Newcomers Behind the Plate

A trio of newcomers will vie for the opportunity to replace Brooke Olson as Utah's starter behind the plate. Shay Wallace, a sophomore transfer from Salt Lake Community College, is poised to step into the role.

"[Wallace] is tough enough, gutty enough and bossy enough to be our starting catcher," Hogue said wryly. "Graduating [Olson] was a huge loss for us, but I hired assistant coach Maggie Livreri, who was a catcher, and she's getting `Shay' ready to fill [Olson's] shoes." Freshman Desaray Akins was Utah's most improved player during fall practice and will have plenty of opportunities to gain experience this season. She is slated to back up Wallace behind the plate. Classmate Susan Duke will also serve as a backup and may see time as a pinch hitter.
