The University of Utah softball team begins its inaugural Pac-12 Conference campaign with four games over three days at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The Utes will face former Mountain West Conference foe San Diego State at 11:30 a.m., on Friday then Western Michigan at 6:30 p.m. Utah will have a single game on Saturday against UC Santa Barbara at 8:30 p.m., followed by a 1:30 p.m., contest on Sunday against Portland State.

Last Time at the Kajikawa Classic: The Utes went 3-2 during the opening weekend of the 2011 season at the prestigious Kajikawa Classic. Utah won its first two games and outscored its opponents 16-0. The Utes scored at least one run in all four of its at-bats en route to a 10-0 win in five innings over Mississippi in the opener. The Utes had eight different batters collect one hit apiece against the Rebels. The next day, Utah yielded one hit during a 6-0 shutout victory over Western Michigan and then suffered an 8-3 loss to No. 2/1 Arizona after falling behind 6-0. The Utes came back strong the following night with a 3-1 win at No. 13/10 Arizona State. Tia Palauni (Taylorsville, Utah) slammed a walk-off three-run homer to give the Utes the victory.
2011 Season Review: Utah finished seven games above .500 with a 29-22 overall record was 7-5 against league foes in 2011. The Utes finished in fourth place in their final season of MWC play. It was Utah's first winning season since 2008 and its 29 victories were the most in a single season for the program since 2006.
Power Players: Utah hit 19 home runs against MWC opponents this season, a mark that led the league. The Utes were third in the MWC overall statistics with 47 homers hit as a team. Third baseman Whitney Holm (Spanish Fork Utah) led the way with a team-high nine round-trippers, which tied for eighth in the league rankings, while Palauni ended in second place on the team with eight home runs.
