The University of Utah softball team continues its 2013 season with five games in the Easton Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev.

The Utes open the weekend with two games on Friday at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park, starting against Idaho State at 3:45 p.m. PT, and then Seattle at 6 p.m. PT. Utah then returns to Craig Park for a single game against Cal State Fullerton on Saturday at 3:45 p.m. PT. Utah heads to UNLV's home park, Eller Media Stadium, for a doubleheader on Sunday, against Long Beach State at 11:15 a.m. PT and UNLV at 1:30 p.m. PT.

Hooping: Senior Kelsi Hoopiiaina (Riverton, Utah) made several plays for Utah in the field from her shortstop position as she turned five double plays and was credited with 12 putouts as she made several impressive efforts.

At the plate, Hoopiiaina hit .412 in Utah's first five games and posted a .765 slugging percentage and a .474 on-base percentage to contribute to the Ute offense. Hoopiiaina was 7-for-17, including four extra-base hits (three doubles and a home run) to go with two stolen bases on two attempts, two walks, a sacrifice bunt and seven runs scored. She now has 26 career steals.

Ramirez Deals: Sophomore pitcher Mariah Ramirez (Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.) appeared three times on the mound for the Utes last weekend at the Red Desert Classic as she three 14.0 innings and allowed seven earned runs on 19 hits with four strikeouts and three walks. She went 1-1 in pitching decisions and came away with a 3.50 ERA.

Cheese on the Charge: Junior Chalese Fankhauser (South Jordan, Utah) is sixth in the Pac-12 Conference with a .929 slugging percentage, tied for seventh with 13 total bases and ninth with a .429 batting average after the first five games this year.

Mendenhall Aboard: Sophomore Marissa Mendenhall (Stansbury Park, Utah) is seventh in the Pac-12 with a .556 hitting percentage

Double the Fun: The Utah defense was opportunistic during the first weekend of play at the Red Desert Classic as it turned nine double plays in five games.

Utah's nine double plays turned is three times as many as the next-highest total in the Pac-12 Conference as both Washington and Arizona State had three apiece.

The Ute defense was stout throughout the opening weekend as it had 62 fielding assists, also a Pac-12 high, while boasting a .970 fielding percentage, a mark that stands fourth in the conference.
