The University of Utah softball team continues preseason tournament play with five games over three days at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas.
The Utes will start the weekend at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park on Friday, facing San Jose State at 9 a.m. PT on Field 2, then Indiana at 11:15 a.m. PT on the same field. Utah will play a single game Saturday on Field 1 of Craig Park against Portland State at 11:15 a.m. PT. Utah will close out the weekend with a doubleheader on Sunday at UNLV's Eller Media Stadium, starting at 9 a.m. PT against UC Riverside then versus Cal State Northridge at 11:15 a.m. PT.

Kajikawa Classic Review: The Utes split their first four games of the season at the 2012 Kajikawa Classic last weekend. Utah dropped a 14-2 decision to San Diego State in the opener on Friday, but then shut out Western Michigan, 5-0, in the second game of the day. UC Santa Barbara took a 6-5 victory over the Utes on Saturday by scoring the walk-off run in the bottom half of the seventh after a play at the plate went in the Gaucho's favor. The Utes closed the weekend on a high note by setting a new season high with 10 hits in a 3-1 defeat of Portland State on Sunday.
Infield Notebook: Senior third baseman Whitney Holm (Spanish Fork, Utah) hit a home run in each of Utah's first three games and totaled a 1.182 slugging percentage with five RBI and four runs scored over the opening weekend. In four games, Holm recorded a .462 on-base percentage and registered four hits in 11 at-bats for a .264 batting average. Holm leads the Utes with five RBI and four runs scored in four games this year and is tied for team-high honors with four hits. Holm now needs just one more homer to tie Niki Hayhurst (32 from 2000-03) for fifth place in school history.
Shortstop Kelsi Hoopiiaina (Riverton, Utah) hit .500 in the final two games of the weekend against UC Santa Barbara and Portland State. Hoopiiaina went 2-for-4 at the plate with her first two RBI of the season on a solo home run in addition to a game-tying single against the Gauchos.
Pitching Notebook: Senior Generra Nielson (Blanding, Utah) pitched a pair of complete games and picked up two wins during the opening weekend of the 2012 season at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. In 19.0 innings, the Blanding, Utah native allowed only five earned runs on 14 hits to go with 17 strikeouts, while only walking three. She limited opposing hitters to a .203 average at the plate. Nielson owns two complete games this season and 13 over her Utah career and has recorded 215 strikeouts.
