The University of Utah softball team hosts the Deseret First Duel and starts its Pac-12 Conference home schedule this week at Utah Softball Stadium. The Utes will face BYU in the annual Deseret First Duel game TODAY at 6 p.m. MT.
BYU enters Thursday's game 10-17 overall after having lost five of its last six contests after dropping four of five at the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu.
Utes on the Small Screen: Utah will make its small-screen season debut on Thursday, Mar. 20 as the Deseret First Duel game against BYU will be aired live on Pac-12 Networks. Krista Blunk (PBP) and Teri Goldberg (Analyst) will call the action.

Thursday's game against BYU will be the annual Red Out!
Pack the stadium in red as the Utes take on BYU in the Deseret First Duel. T-shirts from Deseret First Credit Union will be tossed into the crowd. Following the game, the winner will be presented with a trophy. Schedule magnets will also be given away.
Utes Take Two: After leading the Pac-12 and finishing second in the nation in double plays in 2013, the Utes are back at it this season. Utah's defense once again leads the Pac-12 this season after converting 16 double plays through 19 games.
Flippen is Winnin': Utah freshman second baseman Hannah Flippen (Bonita, Calif.) hit .429 and went 3-for-7 with an RBI to help the Utes split at No. 5 Washington last weekend during the opening weekend of Pac-12 play. Flippen totaled for 11 assists and six putouts with a 1.000 fielding percentage over the two games. Flippen went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in the second inning of the opener at Washington on Mar. 15. She dropped down a sacrifice bunt to put the game-winning run on third base and also had four assists and a putout without an error from her second base spot. Flippen went 2-for-4 at the plate during the Mar. 14 Pac-12 opener with base hits in the fifth and seventh innings. She also had seven assists and five putouts without an error in the field. Flippen is second on the team with a .397 batting average this season and is third on the squad with 13 RBI.
Cordova on the Mound: Freshman Sammy Cordova (Huntington Beach, Calif.) came on in relief and threw 4.2 shutout innings during Utah's nine-inning win at No. 5 Washington on Mar. 15, giving up only three hits with three strikeouts and only one walk to the Huskies.
Kate Can Rake: Junior utility player Kate Dickman (Mission Viejo, Calif.) leads the Pac-12 with a .493 batting average through 19 games. The 2013 Pac-12 All-Conference Second Team selection also leads the team with, 18 runs scored, 10 extra-base hits and is second on the squad with 15 runs driven in. Dickman ranks seventh in the Pac-12 with a .725 slugging percentage, tied for seventh with 34 hits, eighth with a .507 on-base percentage.
Urtez Knocks In Runs: Freshman shortstop Anissa Urtez (Long Beach, Calif.) currently owns team-high honors with 17 RBI this season.

The Deseret First Credit Union decided sponsor contests between the two schools, with the winning school being award a trophy at the end of each year. The event awards points for each head-to-head winner of the two schools across 12 sports. The winner of each contest is awarded three points, with the exception of football and men's basketball, where the winner gets 10 points.
The Utes captured the Duel last year and lead again this season, 38-6.
