At The Plate

The Utes play six games in Utah this week, five at home. On Tuesday, Utah travels to Logan, Utah, to face in-state foe Utah State in a single game beginning at 3:00 p.m. On Friday, Utah challenges Santa Barbara in a single game beginning at 3:00 p.m. Saturday pits the Utes against Colorado State in a conference doubleheader beginning at noon. The Utes face off against New Mexico in another conference doubleheader beginning at noon. Both league battles are key for Utah since the conference season is winding down.

Recapping The Last Outings

The Utes kicked off last weekend with a sweep of UNLV, before being swept by first-place San Diego State. Against the Rebels, Melissa Stahnke's three-run homer guided Utah to an 8-4 victory in game one. Game two saw Heather Bowlin and Brianna Gourdin combine for a shutout as Utah cruised to a 9-0 win. Against the Aztecs, Utah was unable to get its offense going losing 3-0 and 1-0. Bowlin threw 7.0 scoreless innings, but got the loss in the bottom of the eighth of game two.

On Deck

Utah hosts Riverside on Friday, May 2 in a single game beginning at 3:00 p.m. Then, the Utes conclude conference play with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 3 against in-state rival BYU beginning at noon at Ute Field.

Washed Away

It has been a tough season for the Utes, weather wise. Utah has lost 13 games because of inclement weather.

Scouting The Aggies

Utah State is currently on a four-game skid, which includes three losses to Pacific last weekend, 3-2, 5-1 and 8-0. The Aggies are 6-28 overall and 1-8 in league play. Quela Henderson leads the Aggies in the batter's box with a .280 average and five doubles. The Utes lead the series, 78-52, including a win earlier this month.

Scouting The Gauchos

Santa Barbara sits in fifth place in the Big West Conference with a 5-6 league record (30-16 overall). Piloting the Gauchos plate attack is Jamie Trinidad with a.356 average, 30 RBI and three homers. UCSB boasts a team ERA of 1.40.

Scouting The Rams

Colorado State sits in second place with a 6-4 league record (25-10 overall). CSU didn't play last weekend, as its games against New Mexico were canceled because of inclement weather. The Rams swept Utah in Fort Collins, Colo., earlier this month. Utah leads the series 47-23.

Scouting the Lobos

The Utes swept New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M., earlier this month. Utah leads the series, 55-23. The Lobos are in sixth place in the conference with a 2-8 league record (19-30 overall).

Quoting Stevens

"I thought our athletes had a good showing last weekend. We hit the lights out against UNLV. We played ok against San Diego State, but didn't have our best games. They had good pitching in both games and are a very tough and solid team. I wish we could have faced them at home this year."

"This is a very important week for us. We need to get these games in and get rolling. If the weather causes us problems again, we'll just have to do the best we can when we get the chance to play."

Ups And Downs

A Tale of Two Worlds--Utah's offense is swinging for a .286 average in league play, versus a .243 average in non-league games. The opposite is true for the pitching staff. In conference play, Utah boasts a 3.75 ERA, compared to a 2.09 ERA in non-conference games. Defense--Utah has committed seven errors in its last eight games, compared to 20 errors in the previous eight games.

Bowlin Lane

Heather Bowlin didn't allow an earned run in 12.1 innings last weekend. The hurler tossed a combined shutout in her first appearance to grab an 8-4 victory over UNLV. In her second start, Bowlin threw 7.0 scoreless innings before the Aztecs scored the winning run, which was unearned. Bowlin earned MWC Pitcher of the Week honors for her performance.

I-vette on You

Ivette Hernandez continued her hot streak over the weekend. The freshman swung for a .417 average. She tied the school record with three doubles in the first game against UNLV. The California native is hitting .500 in her last six games.

Mona Stevens

Head Coach Mona Stevens is in her seventh season at the helm of the Utah softball program. Stevens, a well-known coach at the collegiate, national and international levels, has a 233-171-1 overall college record. The Provo, Utah, native is currently serving as President of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. In her spare time, Stevens enjoys performing with her band, the Sister Wives.
