WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Freshman right-hander Sammy Cordova was named the Pitcher of the Week in the Pac-12 Conference after throwing two complete games against California to lead the University of Utah softball team to its first-ever Pac-12 sweep May 1-3 in Salt Lake City.
In her two complete-game victories over Cal, Cordova allowed only two earned runs on 12 hits in 13.0 innings during her two appearances. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native struck out eight and walked three Golden Bears.
Cordova allowed only six hits in her first career complete-game shutout as Utah earned an 8-0 win over Cal in six innings during the May 1 8-0 run-rule, six-inning victory. She tied her season high by striking out five and walked only one in 6.0 innings of work.
During the May 3 series finale, a 5-2 Utah win, Cordova allowed two earned runs on six hits to go with three strikeouts and a pair of walks against the Golden Bears.
Cordova improved her record to 10-8 on the season and she now has eight complete-game efforts during her freshman campaign.
This was the first weekly Pac-12 award for the Utes this season since former Ute second baseman was named Player of the Week on Apr. 8, 2013. Cordova is the third player, and second pitcher, to earn a weekly award from the Pac-12. Generra Nielson became the first as she won Pitcher of the Week honors on Mar. 19, 2012.
The Utes continue their eight-game season-ending homestand with a doubleheader on Tuesday against Utah State at 3 p.m. MT. Live video and audio will be available at utahutes.com.
