Washington Series Review: The Utes lost two of three to No. 13/12 Washington last weekend at Utah Softball Stadium, their final home series of the season. Utah walked off with a 2-1 win over the Huskies in the series opener last Friday, which was its fifth victory in its last six home games against Pac-12 foes.
Senior shortstop Kelsi Hoopiiaina (Riverton, Utah) went 3-for-4 at the plate with four runs driven in, but Utah was edged by Washington, 11-8, last Saturday. Utah could not avoid a 12-3 loss to No. 13/12 Washington in five innings to cap the regular-season home finale last Sunday. The Utes totaled six hits on the day. The Utes finished 6-6 in league games during their inaugural season at Utah Softball Stadium.
Turn Two: Forty-one double plays for the Utes this season not only leads the NCAA and the Pac-12, but is the fourth-most in a single season in NCAA history. Utah's school single-season record is 43 in 1989, which ranks third in NCAA history.
Double Time: The Utes have hit a school-record 81 doubles this season, which is second in the Pac-12. The previous school-best mark was 77 in 2010. Six of those doubles came in the first game of Utah's 14-2 five-inning victory in the first game of a doubleheader at Southern Utah on Apr. 24, which ties the school record.
Going Three: The Utes' 10 triples in conference play is the most in the Pac-12 this season, while their 19 triples in all games leads the league as well. Chalese Fankhauser (South Jordan, Utah) is one triple shy of tying four others for Utah's school record for triples in a single season.
Straight Buggin': Sophomore right fielder Marissa Mendenhall (Stansbury Park, Utah) hit the game-winning double that gave Utah a 2-1 series-opening win last Friday against Washington, which was the Utes' fifth victory in their last six home games against Pac-12 foes at Utah Softball Stadium.
Deseret First Duel: Heading into this week, Utah leads BYU in the 2012-13 Deseret First Duel, 25-19.
