SALT LAKE CITY - Seven softball student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period, University of Utah head coach Amy Hogue announced. This is Hogue's fifth recruiting class as head coach of the Utes. Joining the team as newcomers in 2013-14 will be Bridget Castro, Sammy Cordova, Hannah Flippen, Bella Secaira, Autumn Shipp, Anissa Urtez and Maddy Woodard. The seven student-athletes will enroll at Utah next fall.

"We have seven signees, which that's the biggest class we have put together. It's also the first recruiting class that we had committed after the Pac-12 announcement," Hogue said. "The quality of athletes that we have access to is getting better and better. Our hope is that the program will continue to rise as well."

Bridget Castro (INF / Bellfower, Calif. / Calvary Chapel H.S. / Lakewood Firecrackers)

Team won CIF title in 2011 and league title in 2010 ... 2011 CIF Player of the Year ... 2011 league MVP and Grizzly Athlete of the Year ... Press Telegram Dream Team (First Team) in 2011 and 2012 ... L.A. Wave East Regional Player of the Year in 2011 and 2012 ... four-time All-CIF and all-league first team honoree ... ESPN All-American team ... MaxPreps All-State Team ... three-time team captain ... hit .649 with a 1.270 slugging percentage with 11 home runs and 55 RBI during junior season at Calvary Chapel ... won Southern California travel team titles in 2006 with American Athletics and in 2009 with Lakewood Firecrackers ... both teams went on to take third at ASA Nationals ... was also captain of the volleyball team for three years and three-time first-team all-league selection in addition to being named team MVP in 2011.

Hogue on Castro: "Bridget is a middle infielder who has a beautiful swing. She hits the ball with power. She has home-run power and uses the middle of the field as well as anyone I've seen. She has been really consistent for her teams offensively and has great hands on defense."

MaxPreps All-State Team as a junior ... went 25-5 with a 0.88 ERA with 30 starts and 28 complete games to go with 14 shutouts in 2012 ... high school team MVP ... Laguna Hills All-Tournament Team ... Torrance Faster to First Tournament Silver Division champions and member of all-tournament team ... Woodbridge Tournament champions and all-tournament team, which included a no-hitter South Torrance High School ... earned team's Most Valuable Defensive Player, First-Team All-Sunset League and Second-Team All-County awards during sophomore season ... threw a no-hitter Newport Harbor High school that season as well and team won the Las Vegas Spring Fling, Woodbridge and Laguna Hills Tournament championships ... first-team all-conference and third-team all-county selection during freshman season ... that season, she threw a perfect game versus Bingham High School at the Nike Faster to First Tournament ... registered a no-hitter against North Torrance High School in the Woodbridge Tournament Silver Final Championship game ... team won the Cypress, Laguna Hills, and Woodbridge Tournament Silver division champions ... On Deck Zoom Into June camps in 2010 and 2011 ... in travel ball during both the 2012 and 2011 season, she was a member of the 2012 18 Gold Colorado Fireworks, Canada Cup, Triple Crown Championships, New York Championships winner ... team took second at Premier ... team also won the Power Pool TV Game in 2011 ... in 2010, team was second at Colorado Fireworks, third in the 16U ASA SoCal States and the Premier 16U as well as 17th at nationals ... in 2009, team was the 14U ASA SoCal state champions and took fifth at ASA Nationals ... in 2008, was a member fo the 12U ASA Colorado Regional Qualifier champions and the ninth-place team at ASA Nationals ... in 2007, squad took 17th at 12U ASA Nationals ... second place at 10U Western B Nationals in 2005 and 2006.

Hogue on Cordova: "Sammy is a pitcher who has always played on one of the five top teams in the nation. She has a lot of fight. She's faced the best hitters in the country for most of her career so playing in a conference like the Pac-12 won't be anything new to her. Sammy finds a way to get good hitters out and I'm excited to see her in the circle for the Utah Utes."

Hannah Flippen (INF / Bonita, Calif. / Bonita Vista H.S. / Team Mizuno)

High school team won the CIF title last season ... first-team All-Mesa selection and second-team All-CIF (San Diego section) as a junior and sophomore ... earned Team's Best Defensive Player award in 2011 and 2010 ... a .470 career hitter ... also plays volleyball and basketball ... honor roll student ... member of Team Mizuno travel team that won the U16 national championship ... honor roll student ... earned Standards of Excellence awards in Physics and Physical Education ... named school's Most Valuable Female Athlete award ... mother, Mary Lou, was an All-American softball player at Utah State and was a member of national championship teams in 1980 and 1981, before being named USU's Female Athlete of the Year in 1983.

Hogue on Flippen: "Hannah was the starting shortstop for the 16 and under national championship team. She makes big-time plays. She's the player on the field who will turn your head. She is a middle infielder with all of the tools. She has great speed, can hit for average and some power and then is excellent defensively with an accurate arm. She is a five-tool athlete and those are tough to find."

Bella Secairia (C / Huntington Beach, Calif. / Marina H.S. / Lakewood Firecrackers)

2011 Daily Pilot Player of the Year after hitting .450 with 28 RBI ... first-team All-Sunset League selection in 2010 and 2011 ... Scholar-Athlete in 2010 and 2011 ... team captain ... two-time letterwinner and scholar-athlete.

Hogue on Secaira: "Bella is a catcher for the Worth Firecrackers, coached by Tony Rico. They're always a top-five team in the country. She is a leader on the field. Her voice, knowledge of the game and ability to get the best out of her pitchers are her best strengths. She's fun to watch and runs the field."

Autumn Shipp (INF / Santa Clara, Utah / Snow Canyon H.S. / Pegusus South)

Deseret News Second-Team All-State selection in 2012 and honorable mention selection in 2011 ... three-time first-team all-region pick ... helped team place third in state in 2012 ... led team in steals in each of first three seasons ... stole five bases against Dixie High School in 2011 ... led Pegusus Club team in runs, steals and on-base percentage each of last two seasons ... member of fifth-place team at 2009 Little League World Series ... on team that won 2012 Adidas Futures title ... honor roll student ... also a member of student council, spirit clubs, science groups as well as National Honor Society and Key Club.

Hogue on Shipp: "Autumn is a three-sport athlete who recorded the best times from home to first base that I was able to find during the entire year. She's a lefty slapper who's new to the left side, but with her speed and athleticism, she's taken to the trade very quickly. We expect that she'll get here and just explode."

Anissa Urtez (INF / Long Beach, Calif. / Downey H.S. / Lakewood Firecrackers)

Press-Telegram 2012 Player of the Year ... also named Press Telegram Dream Team Player of the Year ... broke every Downey High School records last year ... MVP and first-team all-league selection in 2012 ... honorable mention Press-Telegram in 2011 ... earned player of the week honors ... hit .577 with 10 home runs, 44 RBI and a .990 slugging percentage during junior year ... club team won the Premier Girls Fastpitch U16 championship ... also was an outside hitter on the volleyball team that won the CIF Division 2 title in 2010 ... member of Normaneers Club, a community service organization.

Hogue on Urtez: "Anissa played her entire career at the top level. She won a national championship at age 16. She is a very versatile infielder who spends most of her time on the left side. She has the toughness to play a corner spot in the Pac-12. That's definitely not a job for the meek."

Maddy Woodard (UTIL / Murray, Utah / Murray H.S. / S.L.C.C.)

Led Salt Lake Community College with 16 home runs last season .... named SWAC Player of the Year ... NJCAA First-Team All American ... NFCA All-American ... helped the Bruins go 59-9 in 2012 ... hit .449 with a .766 slugging percentage ... successful on 16 of 17 stolen base attempts ... lettered all four years at Murray H.S. ... helped team finish second in state twice ... first-team all-state honoree ... three-time all-region selection ... also played basketball.

Hogue on Woodard: "Maddy is a junior college transfer from SLCC. I believe she can play anywhere on the field. She has the ability to hit multiple home runs, steal multiple bases and hit for average. A middle infielder for SLCC, but has also played the corners. She is an extremely talented and versatile athlete. Being a junior, I expect her to help lead this incoming group of freshmen."
