CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Utah women's team started off the 2013 season with a solid showing at the first day of the University of Virginia Winter Invitational Saturday. Utah captured a victory in doubles and three additional wins in singles matches.
"I was proud of our effort at the tournament today," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "Especially by Tereza, who upset Tennessee's 25th-ranked Katia Szekely in singles. We also managed a good win in doubles play by Callie and Sarah."
In doubles play, juniors Callie Craig and Sarah Pham downed Tennessee's Sarah Toti and Mimi Fotopolous, 8-3, at the No. 3 spot. 23rd-ranked junior Paige Miles and sophomore Tereza Bekerova fell to No. 12 Brynn Boren and Szekely, 8-2 at the No. 1 slot, while sophomore Natasha Smith and junior Elena Najera-Salas dropped an 8-4 decision to No. 41 Caitlyn Williams and Johanna Henderson at the second position.
No. 72 Bekerova returned in singles to upset 25th-ranked Szekely, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 2 singles spot. Utah saw its third victory of the day when No. 123 Craig routed Henderson, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 3 position. Miles also captured a win for the Utes, defeating Kayla McMurray, 7-5, at the seventh slot.
At the top spot, Pham, ranked No. 103, dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to No. 23 Boren, while junior Lucia Kovarcikova was defeated by Williams, 6-1, 7-5, at the No. 4 position. Najera-Salas fell to Fotopolous, 6-1, 7-5 a the fifth slot, while Smith lost to Tiffany Tavares, 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 6 slot.
