SALT LAKE CITY- The 48th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (1-3) defeated Washington State (5-1), by a score of 5-2, Thursday at the Eccles Tennis Center. After dropping the doubles point the Utes fought back, winning four consecutive singles matches for the victory. Junior Anastasia Putilina, ranked No. 82, clinched the match for Utah with her 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Liudmila Vasilieva at the No. 1 singles position.

"This was a good win over a Pac-10 school," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "Even though Washington State isn't ranked right now, I think they will be within a month. It was great to see us come back after a mediocre doubles performance and play some of the best singles we've played all year."

In doubles play, the 49th-ranked duo of Putilina and sophomore Paige Miles topped Vasilieva and Olga Musilovich 8-5, at the No. 1 spot.

Senior Evgenia Kryuchkova and freshman Lucia Kovarcikova fell to Andjela Kankaras and Ksenia Googe at the No. 2 position, 8-2. Redshirt sophomore Lexi Provancha and freshman Sarah Pham dropped an 8-3 decision to Lea Jansen and Elisabeth Fournier at the No. 3 spot, giving the Cougars the doubles point.

In singles Miles downed Marina Nicolas 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 6 spot, tying up the score at 1-1.

Kovarcikova defeated Googe at the No. 3 position, 6-4, 6-2, making the score 2-1 in favor of Utah.

Pham topped Kankaras 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot, giving the Utes a 3-1 lead over the Cougars.

Putilina then clinched the match at 4-1, from the No. 1 position.

Provancha dropped a 7-5, 6-4, decision to Musilovich at the No. 5 spot, putting the score at 4-2.

Kryuchkova, ranked No. 60, defeated Fournier at the No. 2 position, 7-5, 6-3, making the final score 5-2 in favor of Utah.

The Utes face No. 72 Colorado tomorrow night at 8:30 p.m. MT in Boulder.
