SALT LAKE CITY- The 42nd-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (4-2) defeated 70th-ranked Wisconsin (6-2) Sunday, at the Eccles Tennis Center. After winning the doubles point, the Utes swept all of their singles matches for the 7-0 win over the Badgers. Sophomore Lucia Kovarcikova captured the match-clinching point by besting Nova Patel 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 5 singles position.

"This was a good win for us today," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "We stepped things up in doubles when we needed to and singles went as well as it could have. This was a very important win as it puts us in a good position heading into next weekend."

In doubles play, the freshman duo of Danielle Flores and Natasha Smith downed Aleksandra Markovic and Angela Chupa 8-2 at the No. 3 spot. The team of senior Anastasia Putilina and sophomore Callie Craig dropped an 8-6 decision to Hannah Berner and Alaina Trgovich at the No. 1 position.

The duo of Kovarcikova and sophomore Sarah Pham then topped Patel and Nicky Stracar 8-6 at the No. 2 spot, to secure the doubles point for Utah.

In singles play, 104th-ranked Pham downed Berner 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 2 position, to give the Utes a 2-0 lead.

Putilina, ranked No. 69, defeated Stracar at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-4, to put Utah up 3-0 over Wisconsin.

Kovarcikova then clinched the match for the Utes at 4-0 from the No. 5 position.

Smith topped Markovic 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 6 spot, while Flores bested Sarah Loebel at the No. 4 position 6-3, 6-3, to put Utah up 6-0.

Craig then defeated Trgovich 6-3, 4-6, 10-3, at the No. 3 spot, to complete the Utes' singles sweep.



Utah returns to action next weekend when it heads to Las Vegas, Nev. for a trio of matches against 37th-ranked UNLV, 34th-ranked Texas Tech and 45th-ranked Long Beach State.
