SALT LAKE CITY - The 74th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (7-2, 1-0 Pac-12) netted a hard-fought 5-2 victory over Arizona (8-6, 0-1 Pac-12) Friday at the Eccles Tennis Center to post its first Pac-12 Conference victory of the season.

After Utah captured the doubles point, five of six singles matches went into three sets, making for a thrilling nail-bitter of a match. Junior Callie Craig decided the match for the Utes at the No. 3 singles position.

"It was a great to start out the Pac-12 season 1-0, betting a very good Arizona team," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "I felt like overall I would say we didn't play great, but we competed incredibly well. With the exception of Tereza [Bekerova], who played an incredible match, beating Lacey Smyth at the No.1. I feel really good about the team going into Arizona State on Sunday."

The Utes went up 1-0 in the match after quickly sweeping all three doubles matches and capturing the doubles point. At the third position, juniors Sarah Pham and Craig teamed up to top Susan McRann and Akilah James, 8-3.

At the No. 2 spot, junior Elena Najera-Salas and sophomore Natasha Smith routed Shayne Austin and Inge Hendrix, 8-3, clinching the doubles point for Utah.

To complete the doubles sweep, 17th-ranked junior Paige Miles and sophomore Tereza Bekerova battled Lacey Smyth and Kim Stubbe to a 6-5(3) win at the No. 1 slot.

No. 79 Bekerova then put the Utes up 2-0 in singles action with a 6-2, 6-4 upset over 34th-ranked Smyth at the top spot.

Then, despite downing Stubbe in the first set 2-6, Pham was unable to take the next two sets, falling 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 position, making the score 2-1.

The Wildcats then tied the match at two a piece when Miles dropped a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 decision to McRann at the No. 6 slot.

The Utes bounced back to a one-point lead as Smith managed a 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 victory over James at the No. 4 spot, making the score 3-2.

Craig then decided the match for Utah at 4-2, besting Laura Oldham 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 3 slot. Junior Lucia Kovarcikova then finished out the 5-2 win for the Utes after topping Austin at the No. 5 position, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
