SALT LAKE CITY - The 63rd-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (9-7, 3-5 Pac-12) bested No. 45 Washington (10-9, 2-6 Pac-12) Friday by a score of 5-2 at the Eccles Tennis Center. Junior Callie Craig decided the match in favor of the Utes at the No. 3 singles spot.

"The way I look at these matches, if we are playing anybody outside of the top 25 in the country at home, I feel like we are the favorite," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "I feel like we did a good job of pulling out a very close doubles point which gave us momentum going into singles. I am really happy with our performance in singles, especially at two, three, and five - we played really well. Lucia [Kovarcikova], Callie [Craig], and Sarah [Pham] played great singles matches and carried us through."

The Utes started out strong in doubles action as the 21st-ranked duo of junior Paige Miles and sophomore Tereza Bekerova topped No. 71 Elianne Douglas-Miron and Riko Shimizu at the top spot, 8-5.

Juniors Callie Craig and Sarah Pham then clinched the doubles point for Utah with a 9-7 victory over Julija Lukac and Andjela Nemcevic at the No. 3 position. Junior Elena Najera-Salas and sophomore Natasha Smith then fell to Grace Ysidora and Natali Coronel at the second spot, 8-6.

Although the Utes went into singles play with a 1-0 advantage, the Huskies quickly answered with a victory at the No. 4 slot to tie the match as Smith dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Lukac.

Pham then put Utah back up at 2-1 as she bested Douglas-Miron, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 2 position. Junior Lucia Kovarcikova then routed Coronel at the fifth slot, 6-1, 7-6(6), setting up Craig for the match clincher.

Craig then vanquished Ysidora at the No. 3 spot, 6-3, 6-2, deciding the match for the Utes at 4-1. Despite dropping the first set 4-6 at the top slot, No. 73 Bekerova rallied back to take the next two sets, 6-3, 6-1, over Nemcevic, capturing Utah's fifth point.

Miles then suffered a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 loss to Shimizu at the sixth slot, making the final score 5-2 in favor of the Utes.

No. 63 Utah returns to action Sunday against No. 70 Washington State at 11 a.m. MT. The match will be held at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy, weather dependent.
