SEATTLE, Wash.- The 43rd-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (9-9, 1-6 Pac-12) defeated 44th-ranked Washington (7-10, 1-7 Pac-12) Saturday, for its first Pac-12 Conference win. Senior Anastasia Putilina, ranked No. 77, captured the match-clinching point for the Utes by upsetting 20th-ranked Denise Dy 6-2, 6-7(2), 6-2, at the No. 1 singles spot.

"This was a great win," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "It couldn't have been more fitting than for Anastasia to earn the clinching point by upsetting No. 20 Denise Dy. Today's win was an incredible bounce back from yesterday's performance. Washington is a great team, especially with Denise in the lineup."

In doubles play, sophomore Sarah Pham and freshman Sammie Watson dropped an 8-2 decision to Julija Lukac and Natali Coronel at the No. 3 position. At the No. 1 spot, Putilina and sophomore Callie Craig defeated Denise Dy and Samantha Smith 8-6.

The freshmen duo of Danielle Flores and Natasha Smith then topped Riko Shimizu and Andjela Nemcevic 9-7 at the No. 2 position, capturing the doubles point for Utah.

In singles play, Smith won her match at the No. 6 spot 6-2, 2-1 ret. after Shimizu was forced to retire in the second set due to injury.

At the No. 4 position, Kovarcikova dropped a 7-6(2), 6-1, decision to Lukac, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Utes.

Flores downed Coronel 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 5 spot, putting the Utes up 3-1 over the Huskies.

Putilina then clinched the match for Utah at 4-1 from the No. 1 position.

Pham added the Utes' fifth point by defeating Nemcevic 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot.



At the No. 3 position, Craig won her match 4-6, 6-5 ret. after S. Smith retired in the second set, making the final score 6-1 in favor of Utah.

The Utes return to action next weekend when they hit the road for a pair of Pac-12 road matches against No. 29 Arizona State and No. 28 Arizona.
