SALT LAKE CITY - The 63rd-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (10-7, 4-5 Pac-12) managed a 5-2 victory over the 70th-ranked Washington State Cougars (13-10, 2-7 Pac-12) Sunday at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center. Junior Sarah Pham clinched the match for the Utes at the No. 2 singles position.

"I am really pleased with a hard-fought victory," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "I don't feel like we played our best tennis today but we competed really hard against a very competitive team and I feel really good about the result. I thought it was good for Paige [Miles] to get back on the winning track. That should help us down the road and help her get feeling good about things."

In doubles action, Utah captured two of three sets to earn the doubles point. At the No. 1 spot, 21st-ranked junior Paige Miles and sophomore Tereza Bekerova vanquished Liudmila Vasilieva and Ksenia Googe, 8-2.

Juniors Pham and Callie Craig then bested Elizaveta Luzina and Lize Leenknecht at the third slot, 8-3. Then, at the No. 2 position, junior Elena Najera-Salas and sophomore Natasha Smith then fell to Olga Musilovich and Andjela Kankaras, 7-6.

The Cougars quickly tied the match at 1-1 in singles play when Smith dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Kankaras at the No. 4 singles slot. Miles then put Utah back up, 2-1 with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Charlotte Koning at the No. 6 spot.

At the top position, 73rd-ranked Bekerova rallied back after dropping the first set to defeat Vasilieva, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, making the score 3-1 in favor of the Utes.

Pham then clinched the match at 4-1 for Utah, topping Googe, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot. Junior Lucia Kovarcikova then suffered a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 loss to Musilovich at the fifth slot.

The final score then became 5-2 when Criag battled Luzina to a tight 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory at the No. 3 position.

The Utes return to action next weekend against No. 26 Rice in Houston, Texas.
