TUCSON, Ariz.- The 44th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (10-10, 2-7 Pac-12) dropped a 7-0 decision to 29th-ranked Arizona (14-8, 4-5 Pac-12) Saturday in Tucson, Ariz.
"We played well in doubles but lost control at the very end," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "They took advantage if that and used the momentum to dominate in singles."
In doubles play, the duo of senior Anastasia Putilina and sophomore Callie Craig upset the 35th-ranked team of Natasha Marks and Lacey Smyth 8-6 at the No. 1 position. At the No. 2 spot, freshmen Danielle Flores and Natasha Smith fell to Sarah Landsman and Hailey Johnson 9-8(1). The sophomore duo of Sarah Pham and Lucia Kovarcikova then dropped an 8-6 decision to Kim Stubbe and Susan Mc Rann at the No. 3 position, giving Arizona the doubles point.
In singles play, Flores fell to Landsman 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 4 spot, while Pham dropped a 6-1, 6-3, decision to 82nd-ranked Marks at the No. 2 position. Smith then fell to Laura Oldham at the No. 6 spot 6-0, 6-4, giving the Wildcats the win at 4-0.
At the No. 5 position, Kovarcikova dropped a 6-2, 3-6, 10-8, decision to Mc Rann, while Craig fell to Stubbe 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 3 position. Putilina, ranked No. 47, then dropped a 7-6, 6-3, decision to 66th-ranked Smyth at the No. 1 spot, making the final score 7-0 in favor of Arizona.
The Utes return to action next Saturday when they host Colorado in their final home match of the season.
