No. 54 Utah Finishes Season with 5-2 Victory Over Colorado

BOULDER, Colo. - The 54th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (11-8, 5-5 Pac-12) defeated Pac-12 conference rival Colorado (7-14, 2-8 Pac-12) Saturday at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House to close out its regular dual-match season. Junior Callie Craig continued her five-match winning streak when she decided the match in favor of the Utes from the No. 3 singles position.

"It was a great bounce back after yesterday's disappointing performance," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "Today was a solid Pac-12 win to give us a 500 record in the best league in the county."

Utah captured the doubles point in two sets to quickly go up 1-0. Juniors Craig and Sarah Pham vanquished Dhany Quevedo and Mazy Watrous at the third slot, 8-3.

The 32nd-ranked duo of junior Paige Miles and sophomore Tereza Bekerova then bested Julyette Steur and Erin Sanders at the first spot, 8-4 to decide the doubles point.

Junior Elena Najera-Salas and Natasha Smith's match at the second slot against Carla Manzi Tenorio and Winde Janssens then went unfinished at 7-4.

Going into singles play up 1-0, No. 92 Bekerova quickly put the Utes up 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the top spot over Steur. Pham then downed Quevedo at the No. 2 position, 6-4, 6-3, which set up Craig for the match clincher.

Despite dropping the first set 0-6, Craig returned valiant at the No. 3 slot and took the second and third sets, 6-2, 6-4, respectively against Janssens, clinching the match for Utah at 4-0.

The Buffs then saw their first point of the match when Smith dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Sanders at the No. 4 position. Their second point came when junior Lucia Kovarcikova retired her match against Manzi Tenorio at the fifth slot after the first set, 2-6.



Miles then posted Utah's fifth point when she bested Watrous, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 6 slot, making the final score 5-2.
