SALT LAKE CITY- The 38th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (11-10, 3-7 Pac-12) blanked Colorado (7-14, 0-10 Pac-12) 7-0 Saturday at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy. Senior Anastasia Putilina, ranked No. 50, earned the match-clinching point for the Utes by defeating Kristina Schleich 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 1 singles spot.
"This is an important win," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "Even though Colorado has struggled this win is crucial in getting us into the NCAA Championships. We did a good job in doubles and kept it rolling throughout singles."
In doubles play, the sophomore duo of Sarah Pham and Lucia Kovarcikova downed Julyette Steur and Ashley Tiefel 8-1 at the No. 3 position. At the No. 1 spot, Putilina and sophomore Callie Craig bested Schleich and Winde Janssens 8-3, securing the doubles point for Utah.
In singles play, Utah earned its second point by Colorado forfeit at the No. 6 position. Pham put the Utes up 3-0 by downing Janssens 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.
Putilina then clinched the match for Utah at 4-0 from the No. 1 position.
Flores topped Manzi Tenorio 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot, putting the Utes up 5-0.
At the No. 3 position, Craig bested Steur 6-0, 6-4. Smith then defeated Tiefel 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 5 position, making the final score 7-0 in favor of Utah.
