OJAI, Calif.- Senior Anastasia Putilina and freshman Natasha Smith of the University of Utah women's tennis team each captured singles wins on the first day of the Pac-12 Championships Thursday, in Ojai, Calif. Due to two rain delays only one round of singles was played. Day two of the tournament is slated to start at 8 a.m. PT tomorrow (Friday) with both Championship and Invitational doubles action. The second round of singles play is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. PT, followed by the singles quarterfinals at 3 p.m. PT.
In the first round of the Women's Singles Championship, 52nd-ranked Putilina defeated Oregon's Trudie du Toit 6-1, 6-4. Putilina faces sixth-seeded, 13th-ranked Zoe Scandalis of USC tomorrow in round two. Sophomore Sarah Pham fell to USC's eight-seeded, 28th-ranked Sabrina Santamaria 6-0, 6-2, while sophomore Callie Craig dropped a 6-2, 6-1, decision to second-seeded, fourth-ranked Robin Anderson of UCLA
In Women's Singles Invitational action, Smith topped Carla Manzi Tenorio of Colorado 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in the first round. Smith takes on Arizona's Susan McRann in round two tomorrow. Freshman Sammie Watson fell 6-3, 6-3, to Sophia Hager of Oregon, while freshman Danielle Flores dropped a 7-5, 6-3, decision to Washington State's Olga Musilovich.
In tomorrow's Doubles Championship first round action, Putilina and Craig face Cal's 18th-ranked team of Jana Juricova and Zsofi Susanyi. In the first round of the Doubles Invitational, the duo of Smith and Flores take on Alice Duranteau and Cecelia Estlander, while the team of Pham and Watson face ASU's Leighann Sahagun and Nicole Smith.
