CORAL GABLES, Fla.- The University of Utah women's tennis team (12-11) dropped a 4-0 decision to Miami (20-4) Saturday, in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Championships in Coral Gables, Fla.
"We came back to make the doubles point close," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "We needed the doubles point to have a chance at the upset. Miami is an elite team on their home court."
In doubles play, the sophomore duo of Sarah Pham and Lucia Kovarcikova fell to Anna BartenStein and Brittany Dubins 8-3 at the No. 3 spot. The 87th-ranked team of senior Anastasia Putilina and Callie Craig then dropped an 8-6 decision to the 20th-ranked duo of Melissa Bolivar and Liat Zimmerman, giving Miami the doubles point.
In singles play, Flores fell to Bolivar 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 4 spot, while Pham dropped a 6-2, 6-1, decision to 27th-ranked Mejia at the No. 2 position, putting the Hurricanes up 3-0 over the Utes.
Putilina, ranked No. 54, then fell to 18th-ranked Bartenstein 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot, giving Miami the win at 4-0.
Craig, Kovarcikova and Smith were all up in their second sets when the match was halted.
Putilina returns to action at the NCAA Singles Championships taking place May 23-28, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
