ALBUQUERQUE, N.M - The University of Utah women's tennis team went undefeated Friday in the first round of the UNM Fall Invitational at the Linda Estes Tennis Center.

"I thought we did a great job today and it was nice to go undefeated," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "I thought we took advantage of some good matchups and its sets us up for some nice showdowns tomorrow."

In the first round of singles play, sophomore Tereza Bekerova bested Maria Sablina of New Mexico, 6-4, 6-3, as fellow sophomore Natasha Smith routed New Mexico's Katie Wookey 6-2, 6-1. Junior Lucia Kovarcikova then topped Ashley Newell of Western New Mexico, 6-3, 6-2.

Saturday in the second round of singles competition, Bekerova is slated to face South Carolina's Katerina Popova Saturday at 1 p.m., while Smith takes on Kelli Hine of Texas Tech. Finally, Kovarcikova will battle Marie LeBlonde of Texas El Paso at 2:30 p.m.

In doubles play, Bekerova teamed up with redshirt junior Paige Miles to capture a tight 9-7 victory over Popova and Josefin Andersson of South Carolina. Smith and Kovarcikova then vanquished Western New Mexico's Newell and and Ganna Tiurina, 8-1.

Bekerova and Miles face Michaela Bezdickova and Laura Richardson of New Mexico, Saturday at 10 a.m., while Smith and Kovarcikova take on South Carolina's Adriana Pereira and Ximena Siles Luna.
