SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Utah women's tennis team went undefeated in doubles Friday at the SDSU Fall Classic at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Utes also captured two singles victories in the first day of competition.
In doubles play, juniors Callie Craig and Sarah Pham vanquished Washington's Grace Ysidora and Capucine Gregoire, 8-2, in the red flight and will face Kansas' Dylan Windom and Belen Ludeuena Saturday in the second round.
Junior Elena Najera-Salas and sophomore Natasha Smith teamed up in the black flight to capture an 8-3 victory over Monica Pezzotti and Maria Jose-Cardona of Kansas and will battle Washington's Julija Lukac and Andjela Nemcevic Saturday in the second round.
In singles play, Craig captured one of Utah's victories by downing Memcevic, 6-0, 6-4 in the first round of the white flight. Pham followed with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Laura Antonana-Iriarte of San Diego State in the red flight for Utah's second singles win. Craig faces Arizona's Lacey Smith in the second round Saturday, while Pham takes on Kim Stubbe of Arizona.
In other singles matches, junior Lucia Kovarcikova suffered a hard fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 loss to San Diego State's Michela Casanova in the first round of the grey flight, but will face Riko Shimizu of Washington Saturday in consolation play. Also in the grey flight, Smith dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Irina Constantinide of Middle Tennessse in the first round. She will take on Southern Methodist's Elena Fayner Saturday in consolation play. Newcomer Ute Lexi Antista appeared in the gold flight, falling to Sarah Stelle of Washington, 6-0, 6-3 in the first round and will battle San Diego State's Dora Somoracz Saturday in consolation play.
