Women's Tennis Hosts North Carolina

This Week: Utah (8-4) hosts No. 51 North Carolina on Wed., March 11. The match will be held at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center at 2:30 p.m.

About the Utes: The Utes won their sixth straight dual match by downing No. 63 Boise State 6-3. The important Central region match was tied 3-3 after the singles portion of the contest. Utah rallied to win all three doubles matches to grab the victory. Then No. 40 ranked Anna Svedenhov led Utah from the No. 1 position by defeating No. 91 Manon Buskens 6-4, 7-5. The Broncos' No. 5 ranked Gayleen McManus beat Megan Payne at the No. 2 position 7-5, 6-4. The No. 3 spot saw Linda Engblom fall in a hard fought three-setter 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 to Boise State's Pia-Lena Anders. Utah's Angie Olson lost to Anita Pearson 6-1, 7-6 from the No. 4 spot. Rebecca Rushforth and Heidi Thomas dominated at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots for the Utes, respectively, both winning by the count of 6-0, 6-1. Utah's sweep in doubles was led by the No. 30 ranked team of Engblom and Svedenhov at the No. 1, which defeated Anders and Buskens 9-7. Payne and Molly Sanderson had a big win as they dropped last year's NCAA qualifying team of McManus and Pearson 8-4. Olson and Rushforth rounded out the win as they cruised by Heather Thiry and Taryn Weir-Smith, 8-2. The win raises Utah's record to 8-4 overall.

Utah in the ITA Rankings: In the March 10 version of the ITA rankings, Svedenhov moved to No. 62 nationally in singles. Svedenhov also teamed with Engblom climbed in the doubles rankings to No. 29. Utah also movd up to No. 61 in the new rankings.

Looking Ahead: Utah finishes off a four match home stand when it faces No. 22 South Carolina on Sun., March 22 at 11:00 a.m.
