DENTON, Texas - Junior right-side hitter Alli Spurrier went for a pair of season highs on the attack with nine kills and a .456 hitting percentage as the University of Utah volleyball team swept Prairie View A&M, 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-13) on Saturday in the Mean Green Volleyball Center.

Utah (6-0) hit .449 in the day's opening match, while holding Prairie View A&M to a -.014 hitting percentage. The Utes also earned a 6.0 to 2.0 edge in team blocks and a 7-2 advantage in service aces in their first 3-0 victory of the season.

Spurrier posted a season-high nine kills and a .456 hitting percentage. In her first start of the season and the fifth of her career, the Salt Lake City, Utah native's nine kills came on 15 swings with just two errors.

Junior outside hitter Makenzie Moea'i matched Spurrier's match-high nine kills only had two errors on 16 swings for a .438 efficiency. The American Fork, Utah native also came up with a match-high three blocks.

Senior middle blocker Redd-Brandon had six kills without a miscue on eight swings for a .750 efficiency, while senior outside hitter Morgan Odale turned up a team-high eight digs to go with four kills. Junior right-side hitter Shelby Dalton chipped in five kills on 10 swings without an error for a .500 hitting efficiency.

Sophomore Kendall Cygan dished out a match-high 22 assists, while junior Kalee Kirby distributed 14 assists with one service ace.

The Utes took three of the first four points to open the match and built a 6-2 lead. Utah led 15-9 before going on a 9-2 tear to close a 25-14 first-set victory. Redd-Brandon connected on all four of her swings for a flawless 1.000 hitting percentage, while Spurrier pounded down four kills on six swings for a .667 hitting efficiency to help Utah pick up a .538 to .048 advantage in team hitting during the opening set.

 

 

Utah used another fast start in the second set to climbed out to a 4-1 lead and built its advantage to as many as 14 (23-9) on the way to at 25-16 win in the second set. Moea'i took seven swings for her four kills for a .429 hitting percentage to help Utah post a .455 efficiency as a team, compared to a -.045 mark for Prairie View A&M.

There were five ties early in the third set before Utah put together a 4-1 spurt to grab an 11-8. The Utes would lead by no fewer than two (11-9) the rest of the way en route to a 25-13 match-clinching victory. Spurrier saved her best for last with five kills on seven attack attempts with only one error for a .571 hitting percentage. The Utes limited Prairie View A&M to a -.037 hitting clip, compared to a .367 mark for Utah, and also earned a 3.0-0.0 advantage in team blocks.

The Utes conclude the North Texas Invitational tonight at 5 p.m. CT against Northwestern State before returning to the Beehive State next weekend for the Wolverine Classic at Utah Valley on Sept. 13-14 in Orem, Utah.
