Kathryn Lovell's 13 kills led the Utes in the 3-0 win over Utah State tonight.

SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 24-ranked University of Utah volleyball team (5-2 overall) raced its winning streak out to three matches today, winning its first two home matches of the season here at Crimson Court. On the heels of a 3-0 defeat of Temple this morning, the Utes capped the day off with another three-game win over in-state rival, Utah State.
Game scores against the Aggies were 30-25, 30-21 and 30-11. USU falls to 4-4 on the year.
"The thing I liked about this match was that we got better as the match went on," said head coach Beth Launiere after the win over USU. "And, it's the good teams that do that.
"Utah State played very well against us. It played with a lot of emotion and energy and it took us a while to get them out of system."
It was the defense at the net that led the Utes to victory tonight. Utah doubled up its rivals in team blocks, 15.5-6, and saw three of its athletes tally six-plus blocks in the win.
Leading the way was Lori Baird. She paced all players with eight total blocks. Meanwhile, Emillie Toone and Kathryn Lovell helped out with six total blocks each. In fact, six of the seven players that played in all three games tallied at least three blocks tonight.
Utah also out-hit its opponents tonight. Utah hit a swift .288 while the Aggies managed a -.026 for their efforts. Ledaing the Ute offense was Kathryn Lovell and her 13 kills. The only other Ute with double-digit kills was Whitney Webb. She tallied 11.
The offense ran through freshman Sydney Anderson. She tallied 36 assists but also helped the team out with an impressive line of five kills, six digs and three blocks.
Leading the visiting Aggies was Monarisa Ale (10 kills), Heather Hillier (22 assists), Kelsi Peterson (15 digs) and Melissa Larson (five blocks).
The Utah Classic wraps up tomorrow with two matches at Crimson Court. Utah State and Temple square off at noon while Utah and Missouri State take the court at 2 p.m.
Notes: Airial Salvo saw her five match double-double streak come to an end against Utah State. She had six kills and 13 digs ... Emillie Toone had 17 total blocks on the day, averaging 2.83 blocks per game. She entered the two matches today averaging 2.0 blocks per game ... all five of Utah's wins have been by a 3-0 count ... Utah's last three opponents have not hit better than .109. During that span Fresno State hit -.033 while Utah State hit -.026.
