SALT LAKE CITY - Behind three players in double digits in kills, Utah opened its home campaign with a hard-fought 3-1 (30-14, 30-28, 22-30, 30-19) loss to No. 4 USC on Friday, Sept. 7.

Lori Baird, Kathryn Haynie and Whitney Webb each had 11 kills for Utah (2-4). Karolina Bartkowiak led the team with 11 blocks, while Connie Dangerfield tallied 15 digs with two service aces on the night. Keisha Fisher recorded 37 assists with two aces.

"For two-and a half games we played really good volleyball," head coach Beth Launiere said. "We started blocking the ball and we figured out their sets, which saw us improve. But we need to get more consistent and we keep getting in situations where we give up runs of points, and we need to figure that out."

After falling in game one, 30-14, Utah rebounded to lead most of game two. The Utes led by as many as four points several times. Up 28-24 late in the game, USC (8-0) reeled off six-straight points to win the second game, 30-28. Kimmee Roleder had a kill during the drive, while Zoe Garrett and Katelyn Bishop each combined for two blocks.

The Utes came out of the locker room recharged, taking a quick 7-1 lead in game three. USC wasted no time coming back to tie the game, 7-7, and the match would be a close battle for the next several points. Holding a slim 20-19 lead, Utah would go on a 10-3 run to win its first game of the match. Down the stretch, the Utes took advantage of several USC errors, as well as two kills each from Haynie and Webb, to take the victory.

The fourth game was also close in the early points. Up 12-11, USC took control of the game with a 7-2 run, and would continue to pull away from there to win 30-19.

The Trojans were led by Diane Copenhagen's 19 kills and 14 digs. Zoe Garrett had seven blocks while Geena Urango recorded 21 digs. Taylor Carico tallied 45 assists.

Utah returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 9, against No. 6 Florida on Crimson Court. The match will be taped by CSTV.
