LOS ANGELES - The University of Utah volleyball team outblocked its opponent for the 16th time this season, but could not avoid a 3-0 loss to No. 7 USC (14-25, 14-25, 22-25) on Friday at the Galen Center.

Utah (11-12, 2-8 Pac-12) held a 7.0 to 3.0 advantage in team blocks and the Utes are now 10-6 this season in contests in which they outblock their opponents.

Sophomore right-side hitter Shelby Dalton paced the Ute attack with seven kills on 13 attempts with three miscues for a .333 hitting percentage.

Chelsey Schofield and Erin Redd totaled six kills apiece. Schofield also chipped in nine digs, while Redd connected on five of her first six attack attempts and turned in her six kills on 11 attempts for the match with just one error for a .455 hitting percentage to go with a match-high five blocks.

Junior libero Nikki Sim posted 10 digs for her ninth double-figure-dig effort of the year and now has 36 such performances over her career.

Freshman setter Kendall Cygan turned in a team-high 17 assists, while senior McKenzie Odale dished out 10.

There were nine ties early in the opening frame, with the last one coming at 9-9, before a 3-0 stretch by the Women of Troy gave the home team a 12-9 edge. USC would lead by as many as 12 (24-12) after going on a 9-0 run on the way to a 25-14 victory. The Utes hit .333 in the opener, but USC was able to go for a .571 clip. Sophomore middle blocker Bailey Bateman posted a team-high three kills on three attack attempts for a flawless 1.000 hitting percentage in the set.



USC grabbed three of the first four scores in the second frame and built a lead that grew to as many as 11, with the last occurrence coming at 19-8. The Utes put together four unanswered scored to pull within seven (19-12). Utah's attack was led by Dalton, who had five kills in the second set alone.

The Utes took the first four points of the third set, but the Women of Troy came back with a 4-2 spurt to tie the set for first time at six points apiece. There would be two more ties before a 4-0 USC run gave the home team a 12-8 advantage. USC's lead would grow to as many as eight (21-13), but Utah countered with a 7-1 stretch to pull within two (22-20)

No. 7 USC (18-3, 6-3 Pac-12) was led by 10 kills by Sara Shaw and 12 digs from Natalie Hagglund.

The Utes host Oregon State on Friday at 7 p.m. MT, before taking on No. 3 Oregon on Sunday at 11 a.m. MT.
