SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah volleyball team defeated Arizona State in a five-set thriller (25-23, 22-25, 24-26, 25-22, 15-9) with a dominant performance in the fifth set on Thursday evening.
Utah out-hit ASU .267-.184 in the match for the win, and held a 17.5-9.0 advantage in blocks on the night.
Five players were in double-digit kills, led by Shelby Dalton's 19 kills. Dalton also had 19 digs and a .486 hitting percentage. Erin Redd-Brandon recorded 15 kills with 10 blocks (nine assisted). Morgan Odale had a team-high 26 digs and 11 kills while Chelsey Schofield came away with 11 kills and 19 digs.
The Sun Devils were led by 29 kills and 15 digs from Macey Gardner.
After winning the fourth set, the Utes came out strong in the fifth set, taking a quick 5-1 lead. ASU never came closer than three points the remainder of the way in the 15-9 victory. Utah hit .409 in the fifth set, compared to ASU's .042 hitting percentage. The Utes also held a 4-0 advantage in blocks.
Utah had a rough start in the first set, quickly going down 6-1. After a timeout, the Utes rallied to score eight of the next 10 points to take a 9-8 lead. Through the remainder of the set, the score was tied 12 times with four lead changes. With the score tied at 23-23, the Utes took a timeout and came back to take the 25-23 win with the final two points of the set on a kill from Dalton and blocks from Schofield and Redd-Brandon. Five of Dalton's eight attempts in the first set were kills.
Utah made a late rally before falling in set two. Utah was down by as many as seven points (21-14) before an 8-2 run brought the Utes within two points, 23-22. ASU was able to get a pair of kills for the25-22 win.
Utah held an early five-point lead in the fourth set, 10-5. ASU slowly chipped away at the lead until three-straight points for the Sun Devils tied the game at 18-18. The Utes came back with the next three points which included a kill and block from Redd-Brandon and a block from Makenzie Moea'i. Although ASU would get the next two points to keep the score within one and the two teams traded kills down the stretch, a kill from Odale and attack error on the Sun Devils gave Utah a 25-22 win in set four. Utah hit .395 in the fourth set.
Utah returns to the court on Sunday, Oct. 27, against No. 25 Arizona.
