SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 22 University of Utah women's volleyball team (15-6, 5-3) avenged a five-game loss at San Diego State earlier this season by sweeping the league-leading Aztecs 30-23, 30-16, 30-28 tonight at Crimson Court. It was the Utes' 27th consecutive home win. Utah finished with 54 kills, 15 more than San Diego State, and hit for .317 on the match.

In game one, the were eight ties in the first 10 points, but with the game tied at 10, Utah went on a 4-0 run to take the lead for good. The Utes, who led by as many as seven points four times, hit for .387 on the game. Sophomore Sabine Schulz and junior Kim Turner both hit for .500. Schulz had five kills on the game, while Turner had four.

Game two was close early on, but with a 6-6 tie, the Utes pulled away and never looked back. Utah won by 14 points, its biggest lead of the game. The Utes hit for .469 on the game and held the Aztecs to .000. Schulz again led the team with five kills, while senior Sylva Strzinkova added four.

The Utes led by as many as six (25-19) in the third and final game, but San Diego State cut the lead to one point twice late in the game before Utah sealed the game and match win 30-28. Strzinkov? had five kills on the game, while Turner and Schulz added four apiece.

"We played intense, with a lot of heart," Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "This win tonight was different than our other home wins the season. We played with a lot more heart.

"This was a different team because we got humbled last weekend," Launiere continued. "The team responded with four good practices this week. Now we just need to win like we did tonight on the road."

Schulz led three Utes in double-digit kills with 14, followed by Strzinkov? and Turner with 13 and 10, respectively. Strzinkov? also had 13 digs, marking her ninth double-double of the season. Freshman Shelly Hundley hit for a team-high .538 and finished with seven kills.

Sophomore setter Kelsie Kartchner finished with 43 assists. "Kelsie set a great match," Launiere said. "This week we worked with her on making riskier sets, which she did tonight. It was probably the best I've seen her set."

Junior libero Jackie Morrill led the team with 14 digs. Schulz was tops with four blocks, followed by Turner and sophomore Lyndsey Phillips with three each.

UP NEXT: The Utes host UNLV for a 7:00 p.m. match tomorrow, Oct. 26, at Crimson Court. "We need to follow this up tomorrow," Launiere said. "UNLV always scares me because they are very athletic."
