TUCSON, Ariz. - Junior right-side hitter Shelby Dalton just missed her first career double-double with 10 kills and a career-high nine digs, but the University of Utah volleyball team dropped a three-set decision at Arizona (25-16, 25-18, 25-16) in a Pac-12 Conference match Thursday at the McKale Memorial Center.
Utah (17-10, 6-9 Pac-12) was led by a solid performance from Dalton throughout the match, who came up with 10 kills on 19 attempts with just one error for a .474 hitting percentage in her 15th double-figure-kill effort of the year. Defensively, the Moab, Utah native also set a new career high with nine digs, just missing her first career double-double.
Senior outside hitter Morgan Odale added eight kills and seven digs, while junior outside hitter Chelsey Schofield turned in 10 digs to go with six kills. Schofield, a Provo, Utah native, has had 10 or more digs in three straight matches and in 19 of 27 matches this season and now has 51 such performances over her career.
Freshman libero Tess Sutton had a team-high 14 digs, which is sixth double-digit-dig performance in the last seven matches.
The Utes grabbed a 3-0 lead to start the second frame, but Wildcats then went on an 8-1 spurt to earn an 8-4 edge. Utah responded with three straight to pull within 8-7 and would remain within a point until 10-9 before the Utes put together a 4-1 run to tie the set for the second time (13-13). Play would be tied three more times, the last coming at 16-16, before the U of A closed with a 9-2 jolt to come away with a 25-18 win. Dalton turned in four kills without an error on six swings for a .667 hitting percentage to go with six digs in the second set alone. Schofield registered a team-high mark of seven digs in the second.
The Wildcats scored the first three points of the third and would lead by as many as 10 (16-6) before the Utes launched an 8-2 run to cut their deficit to four (18-14), but could not get any closer as Arizona clinched the match with a 25-16 win in the third set. Dalton added four more kills in the finale.
Arizona (18-9, 8-7 Pac-12) was led by a 12-dig, 10-kill outing by Jane Croson.
The Utes travel to Tempe on Sunday for a 12 p.m. MT match at Arizona State. The match will be carried live on the Pac-12 Networks' regional telecast. Anne Marie Anderson will have the play-by-play with Tammy Blackburn providing the analysis.
