Women's Volleyball Defeats UNLV

SALT LAKE CITY- Utah downed UNLV in four games in Western Athletic Conference volleyball on Saturday night at Crimson Court. Brenda Barton-Whicker led the Utes with 14 kills and 17 digs.

Utah won the first game 15-4, then lost 15-13 before sweeping the final two games 15-7 and 15-12. The Utes improve to 20-7 overall and 9-5 in the WAC with the win. UNLV falls to 8-16 overall and 1-10 in the conference. The Utes had a balanced attack with four in double figures for kills. Kalani Tonga and Stacie Greenwalt posted 13 kills a piece on .333 and .440 hitting percentages, respectively. Tonga also had seven block assists on the night. Graciela Torres had 47 assists for the Utes.

Stacie Smith led UNLV with 22 kills and a .263 hitting percentage. Utah hit .251 as a team while holding the Rebels to a dismal .131 percentage. The two teams were tied at 3-3 in the opening game before the Utes outscored the Rebels 12-1. Utah was ahead 7-6 in game two before UNLV jumped out to a 13-9 lead. The Utes came back to within 14-13 before UNLV scored on their third try at game point. Game three was tied at 6-6 until Utah went on a 9-1 run. The fourth game was even at 9-9 when the Utes jumped out 14- 10. The Rebels rallied within 14-12 before Utah closed out the match.

"I though it was good match on both sides and that UNLV played great defense," said Ute head coach Beth Launiere. "We had to start setting our middles more because they were shutting down our outsides. I liked the fact that our offense was spread around so well."

Utah has almost a week off before facing Brigham Young next Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Crimson Court.
