Utes Open with Loss to No. 23 Colorado

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Utah volleyball team opened its season with a three-game loss to 23rd-ranked Colorado 15-11, 15-9, 15-9 on Saturday afternoon at Crimson Court.

Senior outside hitter Brenda Barton-Whicker posted a match- high 18 kills, hit .238 and had a match-high 16 digs. Middle blocker Stacie Greenwalt had 12 kills and four blocks. Sara Shakula recorded 11 kills and eight digs. Sophomore setter Graciela Torres had a match-high 44 assists and nine digs.

Colorado (1-0) was led by a sensational effort from junior outside hitter Melissa Schultz with 16 kills and a .609 hitting percentage. The Buffaloes outhit the Utes .331 to .200 in the match.

Three freshman started for the Utes, who start the season without two returning starters. Brooke Barton is out for the season with a torn ACL, and Jamie Young is out for one more week with a broken nose.

"I was pretty pleased with the way we played," said Ute head coach Beth Launiere. "Offensively our big guns came to play and our returning veterans are about where they should be this time of the season. We just played a very good team. We struggled a little with our passing and defense, but those are the same places where we are missing people because of injuries."
