Utes Down Weber State in Five Games

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah and Weber State battled for five games over two hours and 21 minutes before the Utes took down the Wildcats 13-15, 14-16, 15-11, 14-16, 15-13.

Brenda Barton-Whicker had a match-high 24 kills and set a school five-game match record with 34 digs. Barton-Whicker also hit .380 for the match. Sara Shakula had 20 kills for the Utes. Freshman Kalani Tonga tied a five-game match record with 10 block assists and 11 total blocks.

Melissa Leonard led Weber State with 22 kills, a .277 hitting percentage and 18 digs.

Weber State (4-4) had the momentum early in the match, jumping out to a 6-1 lead and winning the opening game 15-13. The Wildcats also took a 12-6 lead in the second game before Utah (3-3) bounced back to tie at 13 all. Weber State served for game point three times at 14-13 before the Utes came back to win 16-14 on a kill by Tonga.

"We started really slow," said Ute head coach Beth Launiere. "Then it just sunk into us that we couldn't go down 0-2, and we started playing a lot better. Both teams played great and it was a great match."
