Barton-Whicker Leads Utes To Utah Volleyball Classic Title

SALT LAKE CITY -- Brenda Barton-Whicker had quite a Saturday at Crimson Court. The Ute senior outside hitter was named the MVP of the Utah Classic, leading her team to the title, and became Utah's all-time kills leader.

Barton-Whicker broke the career kills record with 17 put-aways against Southwest Texas State in the first match of the day. She then had 12 kills, a match-high seven digs and hit .375 in the Utes' three-game tournament-clinching win over Purdue 15-8, 15-8, 15-3.

Kalani Tonga, named to the all-tournament team, had a match- high 16 kills and hit .583 against Purdue. Stacie Greenwalt posted 11 kills, a .600 hitting percentage and nine blocks. Setter Graciela Torres, also named to the all-tournament team, had 27 assists, six kills and five blocks.

Utah (5-3) absolutely dominated the Boilermakers (6-3). After winning the first two games 15-8, the Utes took a 13-0 lead before Purdue scored a point in the third game. On the third attempt at championship point, Freshman Lucie Turkova served up an ace for the winner.

The Utes outhit the Boilermakers .396 to .105, and recorded 11 blocks to Purdue's three.

"That had to be our best-played match of the season," said Ute head coach Beth Launiere about the final match. "We served extremely well, and that helped our blocking because we had them out of system. Our middle blockers played extremely well (on Saturday).

"In addition to Brenda (Barton-Whicker), Sara Shakula and Graciela Torres played exceptionally well over the course of the tournament."

In the first match of the day, Utah defeated Southwest Texas State 15-9, 16-14, 16-18, 15-3. Torres had 50 assists, 10 digs, six kills and hit .300.

Makeda Smith led the Bobcats with 22 kills and a .278 hitting percentage. Utah outhit Southwest Texas State, .201 to .075.
