Utes Down Idaho State in Volleyball

POCATELLO, Idaho -- Freshman middle blocker Kalani Tonga came with a monster of a match, posting 16 kills, five digs, three blocks and a .448 hitting percentage to lead Utah to four-game win at Idaho State on Tuesday night 15-9, 7-15, 15-3, 15-1.

Tonga was helped by Sara Shakula, who had 14 kills, a .333 hitting percentage and seven digs. Stacie Greenwalt recorded 10 kills and three blocks. Senior Jamie Young had a match-high 10 digs. Brenda Barton-Whicker, the AVCA National Player of the Week, hit .000 through the first three games, but rebounded from a slow start to post eight kills.

The Bengals were led by 13 kills from Kadie Leonhardt. Karalie Larson had 12 kills and hit .391.

Utah (6-3) outhit Idaho (3-8) .275 to .150. After a competitive first game, the Utes were outhit .235 to .091 in the second game. However, Utah rebounded to hit .387 in the third game, and .462 in the fourth game, while the Bengals hit .179 and -.071, respectively.

The Utes take a five-match winning streak into the Utah State Invitational in Logan, Utah, this weekend.
